STAATSBURGH

Also known as Mills Mansion, this wonderful example of a Gilded Age estate was the home of Ogden and Ruth Livingston Mills. Ogden Mills’ family made their fortune through investing in businesses associated with the California and Nevada gold and silver mines, and he was a noted financier and philanthropist. Ruth Livingston’s great grandfather Morgan Lewis purchased the Staatsburgh estate in 1792. Lewis, quartermaster general of the northern Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, served as the third governor of the state of New York.

The current house was remodeled and enlarged by Ruth in 1895. It is currently under restoration, although the mansion is open for tours, and a guest house can be rented for events. The main house is open by guided tour only, and the last tour starts at 4:30 pm. Staatsburgh is open April through October; December; and Sundays, January through March. Located off Route 9 on Old Post Road, midway between Hyde Park and Rhinebeck. (845.889.8851) www.staatsburgh.org
